Highbrow fashion fan A$AP Rocky is modeling some pricey items for men's online shopping site Mr. Porter. Along with donning a $2,995 metallic silk rain coat from Burberry Prorsum, Rocky sat down for a chat about his favorite designers, dealing with speculation about his sexual orientation and losing his father late last year.
"My Dad passed at Christmas," Rocky tells Mr. Porter. "I'm just getting over it. I stayed in the house but I couldn't cry because I was so hurt." Explaining the cause of his dad's death, Rocky says, "He caught pneumonia on a Friday and died on the Sunday, so it was unexpected, but at least he got to see me do this."
By "this," Rocky means landing the record deal that would lead to the release of his LONG.LIVE.A$AP album debut in January, just weeks after his father's passing. He's also likely referring to his ever-growing presence in music and fashion magazines.
He credits his brother, who was killed about 10 years ago, with encouraging him to rap from the age of 8. As for his interest in fashion, Rocky says as a kid he was into brands like Nautica, Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilfiger. "But in 2005 I started wearing John Richmond jeans," Rocky says. "I was into Prada and Dolce & Gabbana at the time and that's why I started to wear tight jeans, because I wanted to be a model. I started to do freelance work for Calvin Klein so I was slim and it just stuck."
Asked whether his interest in the fashion world has led some to question his masculinity, Rocky says, "People say I'm gay sometimes, but I have a lot of bitches so why would I care? It doesn't bother me at all."
Rocky has a theory on why people say he's gay. "You know why they say that? Because they can't say that I suck, they can't say that I'm not handsome, and they can't say that my lyrics are wack, so they say that I'm gay because they don't have anything on me," he says.
